People are just learning what the middle section of a pair of scissors is for.

We all use scissors on a daily basis, and while they come in a range of forms and sizes, many kitchen scissors have sharp metal shards in the heart of the handles. On January 1, the Redditor shared an image of their scissors and simply asked, “Does anyone know what this part of the scissors are for?”

Other Reddit users quickly commented to the post, shedding light on the feature, which, it was discovered, has a variety of purposes.Removing bottle lids. If you’ve ever been defeated by a bottle or jar lid that’s simply too tight to remove, the metal teeth in the middle of a pair of scissors can be utilized to gain a better hold on the object and aid in the removal of the lid.

In response to this particular usage, one person expressed concern, comparing it to if a ‘wine bottle opener had multiple knife blades sticking out at random angles’; however, others responded by pointing out that as long as the blades are facing away from you – and you’re careful – it’s generally okay.

Cracking nuts. It may be time to store the decorated Christmas nutcrackers for another year, but that does not mean you have to stop nibbling! The middle of the scissors has also been characterized as the ideal instrument for removing the shell from nuts, with one knowledgeable Redditor writing: “Everything’s a nut cracker if you try hard enough.”

breaking bones and claws. You may need to break up a carcass to fit it into a pot to produce stock. Even if it is unsettling to consider, the middle of the scissors is an effective approach to cut through the material. On that subject, one Redditor commented, “Also, they are great for cracking lobster claws.”
